Paul Goldschmidt and Trent Grisham each launched home runs as the New York Yankees jumped out to an early lead, breaking a four-game losing streak with a 6-2 win over the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday night. Grisham’s three-run shot capped a five-run third inning that featured two outs, while Aaron Judge added two hits to support the offensive burst.
Starting pitcher Will Warren carried a shutout into the sixth inning, thwarting any Orioles comeback attempt like the one they staged a night earlier. Warren (5-1) lasted 5 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on four hits and a walk while striking out six. He earned his second win over Baltimore this month. The bullpen trio of Fernando Cruz, Jake Bird, Tim Hill, and David Bednar combined for 3 1/3 scoreless innings, holding the Orioles to a combined six hits.
Baltimore’s starter Trevor Rogers struggled in his return from the injured list, surrendering six runs over four innings on six hits and three walks with three strikeouts. Goldschmidt opened the scoring with a solo homer in the first inning, and Cody Bellinger drove in a run on a fielder’s choice grounder before Amed Rosario’s RBI single in the third. Grisham then crushed his sixth homer of the season.
The Orioles scored twice with two outs in the sixth on Samuel Basallo’s single and Tyler O’Neill’s double, but they missed a chance in the eighth when they put two runners on with one out and couldn’t convert. Despite two errors and a wild pitch, New York’s defense held firm.
The Yankees have now won five of six meetings against Baltimore heading into Wednesday’s series finale, which was moved from a night game to an afternoon start due to weather concerns. The Orioles saw their two-game winning streak end, winning only four of their last 13 games. Basallo and Taylor Ward each had two hits in the losing effort.
