Sophia Flörsch has been named as the first driver for Opel’s new Formula E team, marking a significant step for the German manufacturer as it enters the all-electric championship. The announcement follows remarks from Opel CEO Florian Huettl at the Madrid E-Prix, where he hinted at the team’s interest in young talent and female drivers.

Flörsch, 25, will join the Opel GSE Team as a test and development driver rather than a full-time racer. She is set to take the wheel of the Gen4 car during official testing at Paul Ricard on April 21-22, showcasing Opel’s commitment to the next-generation racing technology.

The German driver has a strong track record in motorsport, becoming the first woman to podium in German F4 and score points in F3. She also achieved a top-10 finish in Le Mans (LMP2) and has competed in events like Macau and DTM. With previous simulator sessions at Opel’s Rüsselsheim headquarters, Flörsch is eager to contribute to the team’s development.

“Formula E is the most demanding race series, and partnering with Opel, a brand with 125 years of automotive history, is incredible,” Flörsch said. “As a German driver, being part of this team is a privilege. I look forward to working closely with engineers, understanding the car, and optimizing its performance.”

Team director Jörg Schrott welcomed Flörsch, stating, “With Sophia, Opel sends a clear message about fostering young talent in electric motorsport. Her precise technical feedback and analytical approach in the simulator and on track will be crucial for developing our Gen4 car. She also boosts visibility for a new generation that combines sporting performance and public presence.”
